Morphing & Evolving Pad In Massive

It's now time to give our song some melodic content!

It is important that EVERY element of a track which has timbre attributes itself toward a final, coherent piece.

By this I mean that in creating a piece, whether it be a complete idea pre-production or ongoing experimentation - it is imperative that every element of the track lends itself to the outcome you want to achieve or the way you want the listener to feel. It is no use wanting to create a moody and dark sounding song and using a Britney Spears acapella to lay over the top. By the same token, if you want the listen to be taken to their "happy place", don't use a hardcore breakdown guitar riff!

The reason I am starting with the pad is that it creates a tinted canvas on which to lay the rest of your ideas.

Breathing Life Into Your Drums

When it comes to drums, a lot of electronic music just cannot stand up to a professional sounding mix.

It seems to me that a lot of producers think it is sufficient to throw some Vengeance samples into a MIDI channel, create a loop, add a limiter and whap it on to Beatport!

In this video, I show you some simple tips that will help you add a little life and space to your drums, as well as allowing the drum mix to "gel" together.

Part 3: Fast & Shuffled Hi Hats

Here is video 3 in the dubstep production series.

In this video I will show you different techniques for the processing and EQ of hi hats. I also use an audio loop I have made to show you have to create some swing and groove.

Part 2: Hard & Snappy Snare

Here is my second video - In it, I will be creating a snare to go with our kick!

The most important element to achieving a punchy and powerful snare hit is the EQing. The reason for this is that you need to layer at very least 2 snare sounds to get the thickness required for the punch. EQ is essential to make these sounds sit together without becomming too messy.

In this video I will show you some great techniques for EQing layered snares as well as compression, parallel compression, parallel reverb and some other techniques.

Each video will explain the creation process and the thinking behind the creation process for a different element of the track. Through the series of videos, these elements will be put together to create a finished track by the end of the series!

In this first video, I will show you how to create a fat & punchy kick drum, using techniques such as layering, EQ, compression and parallel compression.

Enjoy!
